Providing Ultrasounds Throughout Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin

What is an Ultrasound?

An Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive method which produces images of structures within the body. Ultrasound works by bouncing sound waves off the inside of the body. No radiation is involved. This technique is sometimes called sonography or sonar.

We use ultrasound as an important diagnostic tool which can provide your physician with information that can guide your care for clinical management. Our nephrologists will order a baseline kidney/bladder ultrasound after seeing you for the first time in our office, if you have not had one completed in the recent past.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound

Ultrasound exams are essentially painless. A clear gel will be applied to your skin which is used to eliminate air bubbles between the transducer and your body. There will be pressure applied to make secure contact with the skin to ensure that the sound waves are accurate and visualization of the area of interest is clear. Some tests will require a full bladder to begin and the examination usually takes from 15 to 30 minutes, after which you will be able to return to your normal activities.
